“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”
(II Timothy 1:6 NIV)
The MRI machine sat at our loading dock, waiting to be shipped to Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras. It was important to send this important piece of medical equipment to its new home covered with silent blessings and to mark the sacred holiness of the moment of sending it forth with a commissioning service.
Volunteers at Mission Central that day were from an area health care agency. At the appointed time, everyone gathered to read scripture and pray in both English and Spanish. We circled the machine and laid our hands on its sides, covering it with our prayers. The sign of the cross was made with anointing oil as the final blessing was offered.
A local trucking company owner, Mr. Earl R. Martin, Sr., donated his time and tractor and drove the mobile machine to a port in Tampa, Florida to be shipped to its new home.
When Mr. Martin returned to Mechanicsburg, he told us that, at the port, workers wanted to know why there were hand prints all over the machine.
When it arrived in Honduras, there were still hand prints surrounding it.
PRAYER: God of All, we stand amazed in the Presence of Your power and love. Thank You for ancient rites and rituals that help us mark sacred and holy times in our lives. Thank you for Hands of Love that extend from Mission Central into the world. AMEN.
