“ (God) comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, He brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us.”
(II Corinthians 1:3b-4 MSG)
It was one of those mornings and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. I had gotten enough sleep and eaten a decent breakfast. I found myself struggling to put a warm smile in my voice as I answered the phone at Mission Central in my best receptionist tone: “How may I help you?”
A woman said in a small, tentative voice that she had medical items she wanted to donate. She slowly named the items on her list. “Yes”, I said after each one was identified. “We’ll take that and everything else you have”. She continued to read. When the list was finally completed, she thanked me and hung up.
It had been a long call, I still felt a bit out of sorts, and thought I needed a short walk to clear my head. Before I could get up, the phone rang again, and I realized it was the same woman because recognized her number. “I have the sheets from his hospital bed”, she sobbed.
As I listened to her sobbing I said, “A year ago, I sat where you now sit, and I was able to donate everything my husband used on hospice to Mission Central so someone else could benefit from it.” Now my tears unashamedly matched hers. It was only when I spoke words of comfort to her that I realized it was near the first anniversary of my husband, David’s, death.
In the space of one phone call a sorrowing woman had found a place to bring what her beloved no longer needed, but I was the one whose heart was soothed and smile restored. Widow to widow–Mission Central provided a space and a way for us to care for each other.
PRAYER: Loving God, thank You for caring about our feelings and emotions. Thank You for giving us the opportunity to come alongside one another to both give and receive the comfort and hope that comes through Your Love and Grace. And, especially today, we thank You for Mission Central where we experience your presence in amazing and unexpected ways. AMEN
