“12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.”
(I Thessalonians 3:12-13 NIV)
One morning, while at Mission Central, I went to get a cup of coffee. I said good morning to a young man who was sitting in the kitchen. He excitedly told me that his fiancé was in the New Digs section of the warehouse getting furniture and other items for their apartment.
I told him that was great news and I was very happy for him. He commented that it was a great thing this government agency was doing. I explained that Mission Central is not a government agency and that no government money is involved with Mission Central. He was shocked and could not comprehend how it was possible for such a place as Mission Central to exist.
He was clearly wondering, who would be willing to give up furnishings and household items for people they didn’t even know. I shared with him that our motto is “Connecting God’s Resources With Human Need” and that people from all over the Central Pennsylvania area and beyond continually bring things to the warehouse to be used to help those in need.
I went on about my business and later returned to the kitchen for more coffee. The young man was still there waiting for me. He ran over, took my hand and placed a crumpled $10 bill in it. He said he wanted to help. I gave him a big hug (I’m a hugger) and told him that I appreciated it, but thought it would be a good idea if he kept the $10. I told him to find someone who needed the money and give it to that person. I explained that in that act of selfless giving he would experience the joy and wonder of helping someone in need. We hugged again and he promised to do just that.
O God, we praise You because You are a loving and giving God! Help our love to continually increase and overflow into our hurting and needy world—so that others will be blessed by Your Love. AMEN.
