January 27, 2016: Overflow of Blessings

Yard Sale


“…And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

A few years ago the daughter of one of our HUB members had about 20 plastic outdoor tables and chairs that she didn’t want, but didn’t know what to do with them.  Her mother, as a member of our HUB, suggested that we have a yard sale where we could sell the tables and chairs and at the same time benefit the HUB.

A man driving by on the day of the yard sale saw the tables and chairs and stopped to purchase them.  He said that he and his wife were starting a restaurant and the tables and chairs would be perfect for outdoor dining.  We were able to help this couple and our HUB!

Helping in a variety of ways has continued to be a theme of our annual yard sale, which we view as a ministry because everything in the yard sale helps someone in some way.  This is how it works for us.

Members from our church donate items for the yard sale.  This helps people clear their homes of things that are no longer needed and gives us merchandise to sell.  The proceeds from the sale fund the ministry of the HUB.

After the sale the ministry of the “leftovers” begins.  Leftover glass items and other things that would make good carnival prizes go to our local Volunteer Fire Company for use at their annual fireman’s carnival.

Children’s books are given to our Lion’s Club to place in a local grocery store to be given to children in the community.  Computers and related equipment go to the Computer Ministry at Mission Central.  Dishes, kitchen items, furniture and household goods go to New Digs Ministry at Mission Central.

Small toys and stuffed animals are donated to a ministry that enables soldiers to give gifts to children in the area where they are stationed.  All remaining items are given to a local Thrift Shop that is run by a sister United Methodist Church that uses all of the profits to help fund mission trips for their members.

That is how every single item in the yard sale helps  someone with a need and why we view it as an important ministry!

PRAYER: Generous God, thank you for caring for our needs in many and various ways, and for giving us opportunities to serve You and our neighbors all over the world. Thank you for the rich ministry of the HUBS which flows out in multiple blessings for others. AMEN.
