“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. (Matthew 6:19-24 NIV)
Our church and our youth program have embraced the assembling of Cleaning Buckets, School Kits and Health Kits, but being a Mission Central HUB has allowed Liberty Grove UMC to dream even bigger dreams . . . God-sized dreams that have connected us with others beyond the doors of our church building. We continue to be blessed with opportunities to serve and connect.
Our partnership with Mission Central has allowed us to work with other people of faith and other United Methodist congregations, sharing both resources and responsibilities with several of our nearby UM Greater Washington District neighbors and even stretching all the way to an entirely different Conference in Northern Virginia.
Some time ago we received 1200 Health Kits from a wonderful congregation—Messiah UMC—in Northern Virginia. Our congregation verified the bulk of the kits following worship one Sunday. Later that week the adult Bible study connected with the Boy Scout Troop and together they verified the remaining seven bags of kits and prepared all of them for delivery to Mission Central.
Our partnership with Mission Central has also allowed us to connect with those in our community. One example: We planned and hosted a service project for the local high school wrestling team on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday last February, providing transportation to our church for more than 25 young men (and a couple of young ladies), as well as their coaching staff. While here, we shared with our guests the ministries of UMCOR, the vision of Mission Central and an opportunity for them to be the hands and feet of Christ to those in need by assembling and verifying kits. This ministry has been a blessing beyond words!!
PRAYER: Thank you God for opening doors for connections with others that enrich our lives and our service of you. Thank you for allowing us to dream, and pursue those dreams in ways that will enrich the lives of all your children. AMEN.
