After experiencing the love and care from the Donnell House, part of Concordia Hospice of Washington, PA, as her husband, Bill, passed, Clara Jean Thomas decided to “pay it forward”.
Jean, as she is known, began volunteering at the Donnell House, doing office work, representing the organization at local trade shows and visiting with lonely patients. While she loved this work, Jean found her niche with another volunteer opportunity – making seasonal and holiday gift bags for patients.
As it became known in the area that Jean was volunteering with hospice patients, a local pastor, Max Miller, approached her with Valentine’s Day cards to donate. Jean took those and with the help of her sister, was able to complete nearly 40 gift bags with cards, candy, crafts and more.
The patients loved these bags, which led Jean to work on bags for Easter and then other holidays. Mission Central has been honored to be a part of this vital ministry, supplying holiday items for the bags. Jean now has a team of more than 10 volunteers. This group has completed over 200 bags in their first year!
Mission Central thanks Jean for her work and for the opportunity to let us be involved.
