Updates from Mission Central: MissionLink December 15, 2016

Many of you helped contribute to a recent Winter Clothing Drive and we’ve received the following message from Olivia Amodeo, the Messiah College student who ran it:

The winter coat, hat, and glove drive for the children at Downey Elementary School began with a personal passion for interacting with and helping children.  My name is Olivia and I am a senior Social Work major at Messiah College.  I completed this drive as a part of a semester long project.  My goal for this project was to provide a solution to a specific and dire need at this particular school.  I started this endeavor after hearing the need for winter clothing items for these children.  After learning about this, I decided that I would create a winter coat drive by collecting donations from within the community.

I heard about Mission Central in September, and contacted them with the intention of partnering with them and their network of agencies and involved individuals.  I met with Rob Visscher and discussed this project with him and the possibility of a semester long partnership.  Rob and I decided to reach out to his generous donors through a MissionLink newsletter, which was posted to Mission Central’s website as well as Facebook.  After that newsletter was posted, donations began to trickle in.  I visited Mission Central several times to sort through and organize the donated items.  Throughout this whole process, I remained grateful for the generosity of those who donated to this cause.

This winter coat, hat and glove drive occurred on Monday December 5th 2016, and it began as Mission Central dropped off the donations at Downey Elementary School.  The school Social Worker and I set up and organized all of the items in a conference room, while the guidance counselor visited each classroom and asked teachers which children were in need of winter items.  Children from several different grade levels were able to try on coats, gloves, and hats and pick the ones they liked the best.  The smiles on their faces and their eagerness once the items were in their hands were priceless.  This was the most rewarding part of this entire project!

The items donated by Mission Central’s network are greatly appreciated, not only by me, but also by the children, as well as Downey Elementary School as a whole. The Mission Central community’s donations were all used to help very deserving and needy children.

I want to personally thank those who donated to this cause, because it blessed many children and their families, as well as me, to be a part of this process and experience first-hand, the generosity of a community.  As a Christian carrying out this project, Isaiah 58:6-9 perfectly captures my heart and purpose, and I hope it gives you encouragement in knowing the good work you have done in donating and supporting this drive.  “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?  Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.”
