LVC Students Unite For A Day of Service: MissionLink February 11, 2016

One of the first events of 2016 for Mission Central involved Lebanon Valley College students coming together for a day of service at Mission Central’s Cleona HUB. 80 members of the track team wanted to complete a project together as a team building exercise to start their Spring semester and they were able to incorporate community service into their day!

Prayer Walk of Love Held at MC: MissionLink March 10, 2016

Groups gathered at St. John’s UMC in Grantville (a Mission Central HUB) and at Mission Central, to lay hands on and pray over Mission Central and our various ministries.

Mission Central Involved with Make-A-Wish Convoy: MissionLink March 17, 2016

Mission Central participated in 2016’s “Truck Convoy for Wishes”, which benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  We also sponsored a mile of the convoy!

5th Annual Mission Central Fundraiser: MissionLink April 4, 2016

Our 5th annual fundraiser dinner was held in April, this year at Camp Hill United Methodist.  We had the pleasure of hearing the story of Matt and Lindsay Helm, who discussed Matt’s kayaking accident that left him paralyzed and the part that Mission Central has played in helping with much needed medical equipment

 

 

Additionally, Jean Norris, Mission Central’s HUB Committee Chair and member of the Board of Directors, received the Harry Overholtzer Volunteer of the Year Award.

Mission Central Recognized at Innovation Awards: MissionLink April 14, 2016

Mission Central was honored to be a finalist in the Central Penn Business Journal’s Nonprofit Innovation Awards, Mission Central was honored as a finalist in the Management Operations Category.  The Nonprofit Innovation Awards are held each year to recognize local organizations of all sizes and their executives, demonstrating innovation in their daily operations.

Central Penn said that the good work we do provides a better life for everyone in the region.

Torch Award Presented to Mission Central: MissionLink June 9, 2016

The World Affairs Council of Harrisburg, affiliated with the World Affairs Councils of America based in Washington, D.C., presented their 4th annual Torch of Global Enlightenment Awards on May 17.

This year, Mission Central was honored as a recipient. The Torch Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals, organizations and educators that exemplify the ideals of inclusiveness, respect for diversity, multiculturalism and interfaith dialogue.

Additionally, we completed our year-long series, Mission Central:  An Unfolding Story 52-Week Devotional Series.  This featured a weekly devotional that told the story of Mission Central, complete with a downloadable .pdf of each story.

Urgent Need for UMCOR Cleaning Buckets: MissionLink August 16, 2016

Unfortunately, several times this year, we were called upon to help with relief efforts after massive flooding in the southern U.S.  With dedication and help from our volunteers, we were able to answer UMCOR’s call time and again to provide assistance where it was most needed.

Another Example of Our Youth Making a Difference: MissionLink September 8th, 2016

We shared the amazing story of the youth of St. John’s – Newberry UMC, Williamsport, PA.  The youth completed a 10 year challenge, by raising $10,000 for Mission Central.  This was done, mainly by weekly collections of quarters in Sunday School

We welcomed 4 new HUBs in October, bringing us to 37 different HUBs in 8 different states!

2nd Annual “Missions in Motion” 5K: MissionLink November 3, 2016

On Saturday, October 29th, we held our 2nd Annual “Missions in Motion” 5K.  We had over 120 runners participate this year, along with several new sponsors, who all came together to make this a great event.

Winter Clothing Drive for Downey Elementary: MissionLink November 8, 2016

We participated in a Winter Clothing Drive to benefit Downey Elementary in Harrisburg, PA.  Messiah College student Olivia Amodeo ran this drive as part of a project for her senior year.

“Angel Tree” for Goode Elementary Families: MissionLink November 14, 2016

We finished out 2016 with 2 projects for Goode Elementary in York, PA.  First, we hosted an “Angel Tree” benefitting families at Goode, by helping provide Christmas presents.

Secondly, we partnered with Messiah College and Communities in Schools to provide presents to each of the almost 700 students at Goode Elementary.  The week before Christmas, the Mission Central truck, loaded with gifts, went to York, PA, where we spent the day with students and teachers, providing something for everyone.

Additionally, at Thanksgiving, our York HUB provided a full Thanksgiving dinner for 100 people at Goode (50 students plus 1 guest each).  We were proud to be able to put some smiles on the faces of these kids!

2016 was an amazing year at Mission Central.  So much was accomplished, yet there is still more to do.  We look forward to 2017 and seeing what we can do as we work together to reach even more people!
